Dosing Prime water conditioner during small water changes
As many other aquarium hobbyists I use Seachem Prime water conditioners. It’s one of the perspective and well tested products. The main advantage of it is high concentration that let us buy a bottle and use it for months for all aquariums. Indeed, Seachem Prime should be dozed as ‘1 capful (5 mL) for each 200 L (50 gallons*) of new water‘. That’s fantastic!
The only nuisance with that is how should I measure a doze for an ordinary bucket of water I usually use for water changes.
Let’s recalculate that into drops of Prime mixture.
My bucket of common, it holds 2.5 gallons of water. So, I need (5ml / 50g) * 2.5g of Prime. That will be exactly 1/10 of a milliliter.
Taking onto account that one 1 milliliter of water holds 20 drops of it, we can see that 1/10 ml is 2 drops.
As a result of this simple calculations we see that 2 drops of Seachem Prime is enough for one 2.5 gallons bucket of water. At the same time, I need to point your attention that mentioned amount of Prime will remove ‘approximately 1 mg/L ammonia, 4 mg/L chloramine, or 5 mg/L chlorine‘. In case you feel that your water is really bad, just add more than two drops of water conditioner. Another good thing about Seachem Prime that is overdoing doesn’t not cause any problems. Good luck with you aquarium maintenance duty
